WOVEN | ART THERAPY | FEMINIST | VISUAL STORYTELLING | TRADITIONS
“We are all related” is a common phrase in most Indigenous communities. It encompasses the belief that we are connected to the earth through people, plants, animals, and elements. At designated times throughout the festival, participants will be asked “what traditions strengthen us together?” and invited to write or draw on 18-foot strips of colorful fabric that will be woven together throughout the day on two enormous looms. The activity will result in large-scale textile piece, “We are all children of the same mother” that unites both looms and the painting into one cohesive fabric. The project aims to create a communal experience of visual storytelling and a bearing witness of each other. The gifting of the ribbon is a nod to the Ribbon Skirts worn by Indigenous women and are a symbol of resilience, survival, and identity. Ribbon skirts are used as armor and personal reclamation. The ribbon skirt is also a reminder of our roles in our community as women and as members.
