In 1874, San Diego’s official census count hovered around 3,000 residents. A small group of local amateur naturalists formed the San Diego Society of Natural History. This year, The San Diego Natural History Museum celebrates its 150th anniversary! Our current county population (of 1.39 million people) is invited to its Summer of Wonder events and celebrations to ring in the milestone birthday, culmulating in an “unstuffy” Big Birthday Block Party on October 23, 2024.

Vanguard Culture joined The Nat at their kick-off of Summer 2024’s Nat at Night on May 24. Every Friday night until August 30, the Museum is open until 10 PM with half-price admission after 5 PM to access the museum’s exhibits and the rooftop deck. The Nat rooftop overlooks the Park’s iconic fountain and out toward the mountains with a SUMMER OF WONDER photo opp worthy of everyone’s Instagram feed. The sunny patio has a great view and San Diego’s best al fresco menus. In addition to a well-stocked bar, guests can purchase small plates from a special menu by Wolf in the Woods. The eatery was recently named the Restaurant of the Year by San Diego Magazine. Each dish is diverse and delicious.

Evening hours include special features — like drinking and drawing with Sketchparty and Sova tacos & trivia — and a festive vibe ideal for dates, girls’ nights, co-working bonding, adult and family tourists, and big kid summer sleepovers (followed by a viewing of Night at the Museum perhaps?) Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the door. As always, members of The Nat and Explorer pass holders enjoy free general admission.
The Nat planted a pretty special corner of the world that’s free to all Balboa Park guests. The Nature Trail at the Nat features native plans foundational to the shared ecosystem of San Diego and the Baja California Peninsula. The series of pocket gardens alongside the building will open with a free Garden Fair—featuring lawn games, garden giveaways and information, and community partners—on Saturday, June 29 at 10:00 AM.
That same last weekend in June, The Nat begins screening a brand new T. REX film. Created by leading tyrannosaur experts and visionary artists, this family-friendly film is the ultimate dino documentary for T-Rex aficionados.
The Nat’s rich history is proven in their plethora of incredible anniversary offerings—from local history to kids summer camps—for every San Diego personality.
